Textbooks support background, review articles map a field and primary papers report specific investigations. Standards describe requirements within their stated scope and edition. These sources answer different questions.

Identify what you need before searching. A recent paper may be less useful than a careful foundational explanation when the key concepts are unfamiliar.

Identify the author, publisher or repository, publication date and version. Follow a reference to its actual record rather than relying on a copied quotation. Look for correction or retraction information when the claim matters to a decision.

Publication venue, citation counts and attractive formatting are not substitutes for reading the methods and limitations.

Open access means you may be able to read a work; reuse still depends on the applicable license. Standards, books and datasets can have separate restrictions.
