Teach the reasoning, not just the answer

For Educators

Plan learning experiences that make scientific ideas understandable, invite questions and reveal how evidence supports a claim.

Scope & availability

Resources here do not constitute an accredited curriculum, institutional license or a supervised classroom program.

01

Specify an observable learning outcome

Choose what learners should be able to explain, compare or demonstrate. Account for prior knowledge and the vocabulary needed to take part.

A focused outcome helps avoid introducing a visually impressive tool that does not actually support the lesson.

02

Choose and adapt resources carefully

Use source material appropriate to the audience and preserve essential limitations when simplifying language. Explain whether an image is a diagram, a simulation or a photograph of an actual process.

Check licenses and attribution requirements before distributing text, figures, models or recordings.

03

Design participation and assessment

Offer a task that reveals reasoning, such as interpreting a figure or comparing explanations. Build in time for questions and a way to correct misconceptions.

Consider accessibility, language, connectivity and alternatives to device-dependent activities. A quiz score alone may not demonstrate the intended understanding.

04

Plan safe and responsible use

Physical activities, younger learners and personal data require appropriate supervision, permissions and institutional review. Do not assume a website supplies those arrangements.

For a proposed institutional activity, describe audience, outcome, format and resources through the partnership route. Confirm capabilities before promising a class access to an unfinished service.

For example, a model-inspection lesson could ask learners to identify visible components, explain one relationship and list information the model does not supply. A written diagram can provide an alternative route. The assessment should test the explanation, not whether a learner owns a device capable of rendering the model.
