Identify the scientific story
Choose a process, question or investigation with a clear narrative. Explain what the audience can learn by seeing the work rather than only reading about it.
Avoid substituting dramatic visuals for scientific meaning. A scene in a laboratory is not proof of a finding, and a reconstruction should not be presented as original footage.
Distinguish observation from illustration
Label simulations, reconstructions and conceptual imagery. Use original sources to support scientific claims and explain the limitations of any visual simplification.
When showing an experiment, clarify what is being measured and what the demonstration cannot establish. Editing should not create a causal sequence that did not occur.
Plan permissions and participant protection
Filming may require location approval, participant consent and rights for archival material, music, graphics and data. Research subjects and minors may need additional safeguards.
Do not disclose restricted laboratory work or personal information for the sake of a compelling shot. Agree what can be recorded and published before production.
Prepare an evidence-led treatment
Describe the audience, central question, narrative outline, proposed contributors, visual approach and supporting evidence. Identify access you already have and permissions still needed.
